Due to Stardew Valley‘s huge success and continuing popularity, a lot of similar games have come out, all of which try to capture the same relaxing, cozy, and casual vibe. One Lonely Outpost is, at the end of the day, just another game that follows the trend, but it is an ambitious early-access project in the same genre that adds a few new features.
But instead of helping Pelican Town and carrying on your grandfather’s tradition, you’ll be outfitted like an astronaut to farm crops and explore a strange planet in space. If the game’s setting and the fact that it’s in early access make you think twice about buying it, here are nine things you should know before you do.
The Game Starts Off A Bit Slow
If you’ve played Stardew Valley or a similar game, you might find One Lonely Outpost‘s introduction and training to be a bit slow. Players who are new to the genre might not feel the same way. In other words, you can expect to learn how the game works slowly.
Once you’ve done a few simple jobs you’ve been given and learned how to use your tools, you’ll start to get more independence and freedom. Hopefully, you’ll start to feel like a space explorer at this point.
You Get A Cute Robotic Cat
Being the first person to settle on a new world can be pretty lonely, but at least you have a cute robot cat named QWERTY to keep you company. As you play, you’ll find that QWERTY can do a few things that the normal cat can’t.
You might think your cat can talk to you in its own way or language, but QWERTY is a robot, so you can have full-fledged chats with the little guy. You can even ask questions that could teach you something.
Currently, There Is No Romance System
Unlike Stardew Valley or Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, One Lonely Outpost doesn’t have any systems or mechanics that let you explore romantic interests. But the good news is that Freedom Games has plans for a system like this in the future.
When you’ll be able to start dating again is a different story. If you like things like that a lot, you can always save your money until a future update adds those benefits.
You Can Only Play The First Act
This isn’t a given, but it doesn’t come as a big surprise either. Since the game is in early access, you’ll only be able to go so far until new content is added. This means that you’ll only get to see a small part of the plot and story.
But this doesn’t have to be a reason to give up. As it is, the story and plot points you will learn about are enough to make the experience interesting.
Even though getting resources is a big part of the game, you’ll find that there’s more to it than that.
There Are Some Thoughtful, Immersive Features
One Lonely Outpost isn’t a perfect copy of real lif. So there will always be things to criticize about it in terms of reality. However, there are still some parts of the game that show that it was thought out and made with care.
Finding and mining ice crystals is a creative way to get water in the game. It’s best not to give away too many of the little shocks and features you’ll find in the game. We hope that when you play again, you’ll find and enjoy even more things that add to the game’s atmosphere.
Settings And Options Are Sparse
If you were hoping for more settings and options than the bare minimum. You’ll have to lower your standards or get ready to be disappointed. Aside from changing the music and sounds and remapping the keys, that’s pretty much it.
Even though this is fine for a basic gaming experience. It would be nice to see choices that are bigger and change the game. One example is the advanced game settings in Stardew Valley. Which let you change earnings margins, mine rewards, and other things.
UI And Text Boxes Can Be Difficult Sometimes
Even though this is probably a bug that will hopefully be fixed soon, you may find that some popups and boxes you deal with in Snake Game are hard to close sometimes. So, it may take you a while to figure out where to click.
Also, when you hover over an item in your collection, information or tool tips may take a few seconds to show up. This isn’t a big deal, but it’s something to be aware of. Aside from that, the game’s user interface (UI) works fine on its own.
The Map Isn’t That Interactive
The main purpose of a game’s map is to show you where you are in the area, level, or world you’re in. As well as where you’ve been and where you still need to go. In the end, One Lonely Outpost does these simple things well.
But there are certainly more things that could be added. For example, it would be nice to be able to put custom markers on the map or to have a map that changes in real time. So you can see your farm plots or current goals.
The Music Is Good, But Largely Ambient
In general, the music does a great job of making the world feel “spacey” and calm as you explore it. The choice of sounds goes well with the images as well.
The only thing that could be a problem is that the music sometimes feels too calm.
Some of you won’t care about this, and you’ll be happy to get lost in whatever job or goal you’re working on. If, on the other hand, you like to be surprised by a lively, memorable music. You probably won’t find that in the game as it is now.
